Nicholson Ren

Nicholson is a Malaysian-Chinese freelance cinematographer and colourist based in the Melbourne film industry since 2016.

In 2023 he produced and lensed the AACTA-nominated short film Jia which has screened in over 30 film festivals internationally while also winning multiple national awards. His debut feature film Time and Tide premiered at Visions du Réel in 2026 and also won the Sydney Film Festival Documentary Australia Award.

He has also been part of the Camera and Video Team on studio-led projects such as La Brea (2021-2022), Ricky Stanicky (2023), Betterman (2024) and Insidious: Out of the Further (2026).

His adaptive style comes from a background of experimentation and the philosophy that each story is unique. His approach to lighting is motivated by naturalistic tendencies resulting in a low-key look to most of his work. A quality that makes his work stand out from others is not just in the pursuit of beautiful visuals but rather for purposeful imagery that gives meaning in an edited sequence. His love of indie and foreign language cinema found at an early age, lends to his creativity and visual ability.
